two legs good four legs bad

My boy was having a great time today with his animals and pine cones and wood bits.
The scenario he created was quite interesting!

Pig up a tree preaching to the masses?

What does a pig say to the Tasmanian devil, the chicken, the elephant and the rest of the crowd? How does he inspire them - is he calling for change or action?

The Tasmanian devil in particular, is transfixed. Is he open mouthed in amazement or is he vocalising his deeply felt support or opposition to the fiery speech the pig made?

I say that in this modern world we need more speakers like this - that can draw a crowd out of the woods, an eclectic crowd that gathers together despite difference and listens in open mindedness and awe. It made me think about some of my favourite speakers and speeches. I still remember hearing Lester-Irabinna Rigney speak as a uni student and feeling like I would follow him anywhere! What a skill.

Who are the speakers of today?

Lack of fidelity...

Another way of reflecting on having too many things in my head is to consider the lack of fidelity I have for any one task.

http://thedoily.blogspot.com/2009/04/does-every-home-have-its-dumping-ground.html

Do I love each task enough or are they callously abandoned just before the moment of fulfilment?

So in the spirit of fidelity - if the number of thoughts about completing this task are any indication of my deep and enduring love for it - I will turn this....

into something more!

Hopefully, as a start it will become just a pile of fabric and a sewing desk, but then, perhaps, a sniff of a real task, a sniff of creation and completion!

A pair of maternity 'trous' made of one of my hoarded old blankets!

note. for the purpose of indulgence, consideration of any one persons lack of time, ridiculous interruptions or small landslide events effecting our ability to complete tasks has been ignored! (please read this bit in an "authorised by Joe Bloggs of the loonie party" kind of voice)

Adelaide Hills Feral Fruit Tree Mapping

Found on another blog and I am inspired...

http://www.greenfoot.com.au/2009/04/22/i’m-feral-fruit-tree-mapping/

For a start there are the quinces in the horse paddock over the fence that are unloved, the plums down the road, the apples on the way to the bus stop and the LOADED quince trees I saw yesterday on the way back from the shop...

So, I really want to start a local one - Adelaide hills. How about with a glut recipe attachment!

This unfinished blog will be my prompt.

Love affair with a crock pot

Aaah the crock pot...

A recent re-discovery along with Margaret Fulton with whom I am also very much smitten.

My crock pot even matches the book!

Where to begin my praise...
You can put it on at night and go to bed, you can put it on in the morning and eat at night, you can make stews, dahl, puddings, stewed fruit, jam, bread even quince paste which I intend to attack soon. Oh and the flavour of a slow cooked meal..
As a vegetarian, Ms Fulton is a little heavy handed with the meat when it comes to her recipe selection. However, having tried a few of her non meat ideas, now I am starting to venture out into Fulton-less territory with only a little trepidation. One of the glories being that venturing out requires so little time or effort! 10 or 15 minutes and a selection of 'low' or 'high' and 4 - 8 hours of LIFE to enjoy whilst your dinner slowly grows in taste and flavour!
The creamy rice pudding is a favourite, the somewhat experimental dahl also a hit. My meat eating offsider is also most in favour of the crock pot and has made several 'hearty stews'.
As a mother with too many things in my head - I love the crock pot!
The only issue so far is that since it requires 4 - 8 hours cooking - only one meal at a time. The meat eaters and the vegetarians are competing for access to this daring and fantastic piece of kitchen ware - perhaps we could consider a row of crock pots - one meat, one veg, one pudding.
Aaah, culinary fantasy of the evening!

Why I am here?

So this blog is a result of there being too many things in my head...
I would like to write, sew, cook, garden, preserve, paint, pot, sculpt, ride, swim, walk, read, be a theatre goer, write letters, run a small business, campaign for home birth and women's rights, campaign for the environment, install solar energy and grey water, spend more time with the chooks, watch the sun come up, learn more about community development and ethics, spend more time with friends, make clothes, make toys, engage in local community, start a local parent support network and get more sleep to name a few. I basically want 500 cakes and I want to eat them all as well. That could explain my ever expanding waist line, no wait, that is my second child!
